Buying a present for a baby can be a bit confusing. As each child grows and develops at a different rate, it can be difficult to know exactly what they will like, understand and be interested in.

To help you out, we've broken down milestones that usually occur around this time to help you find the perfect gift for your tiny recipient.

How to choose the best gift investment

The best advice we can give when it comes to purchasing a gift for a one year old is to ensure that it's not only engaging but also long lasting. You want them to be able to play with it for years, not days! Plus, we all know how destructive young ones can be, so you want your purchase to be able to withstand some fairly rough treatment.

Consider opting for toys made of wood or thick, good-quality plastic as these offer a lot of sturdiness to withstand playtime with little ones. Plus, finding things that could stay of interest as they get older will mean that your gift won't fall to the bottom of the toy box after a couple of months.

Music and movement toys

Babies gravitate towards anything that makes noise, which makes any object that produces music or fun sounds an instant winner. Exposing kids to music early also helps to stimulate important areas of the brain, including language development, social skills and gross-motor development, meaning that your gift will help them to learn as they play.

Pull and push toys

One of the biggest milestones for one-year-olds is crawling and, of course, the next step – walking! In order to help them build up the strength they'll need, consider investing in a push and pull toy. Finding one with extra entertainment features like built-in shape sorters, bead mazes, music or moving pieces will also add to the lifespan of the toy.

Fill and spill toys

Initially, if a toy falls onto the floor a baby won't seek to find it. However, as they get older their curiosity grows and they will gradually begin to investigate things that vanish! In order to encourage this new found curiosity, fill-and-spill toys are great for showing babies the idea of losing and finding things and how it can be a whole lot of fun.

Sorting and stacking toys

Little ones enjoy building things, making shape sorters and stacking objects a great gift. The toys allow babies to begin familiarising themselves with shapes, matching colours and even managing smaller objects. Building blocks are also a great option as they not only help babies build core strength in a sitting position but they're fun too.

Ride-on toys

On the topic of developing core strength, ride-on toys also help to do that just. Not only are they super entertaining for toddlers, the back-and-forth motion provides soothing sensory input. However, when choosing one of these, do opt for a design that is low to the ground to minimise the chances of injury if the child does accidentally trip or lose their balance.

The parent approved gift

Of course, there are also gifts that will just make parenting a whole lot easier. Think of things that they would need and you've probably hit the nail on the head. This doesn't mean these have to be boring or non-exciting gifts but something that will be very much appreciated.

Soft and cuddly toys

Obviously, not everything can be high energy and a million miles an hour, so getting a one-year-old something soft and snuggly will go a long way! Whether it be a blanket, teddy or super comfy pyjamas, these are things that a baby is always going to appreciate come bedtime.

Clothing

Of course, not everything can be fun and games! Sometimes the best gift is something you know the little one will NEED rather than want.

Clothes can often be your best bet when it comes to purchasing gifts for a one-year-old and here are our top picks!
